While working as a Photo Editor on the small visuals team for Newsweek, I was responsible for weekly print and daily digital photography packages that included breaking news, features, long-term investigative pieces, as well as lifestyle and entertainment.
Below is a small collection of favorite spreads and online displays of both originally commissioned photography and wire photo research.
JUNE 6, 2023: FEATURE
PRINT WIRE RESEARCH
For the June 6, 2023 feature story, we reported on Formula 1’s entry into the U.S. market. I advocated to use the race photograph for the cover of the magazine (left), instead of a photo illustration featuring a stock photo, so we didn’t risk accuracy while stilll leading the magazine with color, movement, and the ~ speed ~ of the sport. Leading the photography research for this cover story was one of my favorites, and I even learned that my husband has been to several (??) F1 races.
We used the artistic concept art on the inside spread (far below).

APRIL 21, 2023: PERISCOPE
ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIDGET BENNETT
I had followed photojournalist Bridget Bennett’s work on Instagram for years before I got the opportunity to assign her to photograph the Holly Harris and her family on the day they moved out of their apartment in Las Vegas amidst an eviction crisis. I knew from her previous work that Bridget would approach Holly and her children with care on a difficult day.
I was excited to use two very different photographs to lead the online story (right) and the print package (below). Both images capture the exhaustion of Harris and her children the day of their move in the Las Vegas sun.

AUGUST 25, 2023: FEATURE

For the secondary August 25, 2023 issue, Shaun Waterman’s investigative story considered the U.S. government’s dependency on Microsoft products and the consequential monopoly posing a high risk for hacking. Through Getty Images and Digital Visual Information Distribution System (DVIDS), I researched through years of images to source visual evidence of military figures utilizing Microsoft products such as non-Apple devices as well as softwares like Microsoft Teams and Powerpoint.

OCTOBER 7, 2022: PERISCOPE

In Tom O’Connor’s Newsweek exclusive interview with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, President Vladimir Putin’s diplomat warned that U.S. support of Ukraine’s war efforts could result in “dangerous consequences.” For photo research, I was thrilled to find this opening photograph with Lavrov in focus behind a blurry Putin.

MAY 12, 2023: FEATURE

For the May 12, 2023 issue, David Freedman’s feature story revealed that following the opioid addiction crisis, patients with legitimate medical needs were losing access to lifesaving medication. For my approach to photo research, I chased every visual aspect of the opioid crisis: key players like the CDC, the Sackler family, demonstrations for government intervention, patients who need medication, and officials in Mexico surrounded by confiscated drugs.

Each week, Newsweek featured two spreads of significant photography from the week called In Focus. Images could include news events, culture, or simply a beautiful photograph. For the In Focus package, I’d research Getty Images to present a tight edit to the visuals team, as well as collaborate with the design and edit teams to determine the final package. This particular week featured photographs of demonstrators in Turkey protesting Iran’s morality police in the wake of Mahsa Amini’s death, Adnan Syed’s release, London Fashion Week, and the aftermath of Category 1 Hurricane Fiona.
APRIL 14, 2023: IN FOCUS

Each week, Newsweek featured two spreads of significant photography from the week called In Focus. Images could include news events, culture, or simply a beautiful photograph. For the In Focus package, I’d research Getty Images to present a tight edit to the visuals team, as well as collaborate with the design and edit teams to determine the final package. This particular week featured photographs in the aftermath of the Covenant Shooting in Nashville, a fire at a migration center in Mexico, a sinkhole in Ecuador, and demonstrators protesting the right-wing government in Israel.
APRIL 7, 2023: IN FOCUS

Each week, Newsweek featured two spreads of significant photography from the week called In Focus. Images could include news events, culture, or simply a beautiful photograph. For the In Focus package, I’d research Getty Images to present a tight edit to the visuals team, as well as collaborate with the design and edit teams to determine the final package. This particular week featured photographs depicting waste collection strikes in Paris, a Russian jet dumping fuel on a U.S. drone, shares of Credit Suisse plummeting, and a newly discovered species of snail.

ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL NOBLE JR.
Michael Noble Jr.’s photographic work had long been on my radar and when we needed a photographer in Oklahoma for this delicate story investigating jails in Oklahoma ignoring inmates immediate health emergencies, Michael immediately came to mind. I had admired his tender approach to portraiture and I got chills when I saw James Buchanan, one of the main characters, pose shirtless to show Michael his scar from his neck fracture suffered during incarceration.

Using a Slack channel, editors and writers would make timely photo requests for online stories running on newsweek.com all throughout the day. For this request, the writer was covering President Joe Biden’s state visit to Ireland, prompting an interesting challenge to find a wire photograph that offered more narrative than a simple image of the president.

For this request, the writer analyzed poll data that revealed how Americans felt pessimistic about the future, presenting an opportunity for a conceptual image that didn’t show faces or specific events.

For this request, Katherine Fung questioned if President Joe Biden could reach Latino voters in the 2024 presidential campaign so this 2020 photograph of Latino supporters attending a Biden/Harris Nevada Hispanic Legislative Caucus event on horseback worked well photographically and narratively.
